08-08-08, Beijing Olympics, and the 80s Hit Makers

Today is August 8, 2008 – the start of the Olympic Games in Beijing. Chinese considered number 8 very lucky and is being associated with wealth and prosperity. That is why the eight day of the eight month of year two thousand and eight (08-08-08) is regarded extremely propitious. As a matter of fact, due to the rare chance of this date to happen, a lot of us have already planned what’s the perfect way to celebrate this date. In China alone, it was reported that about 9,000 couples are expected to get married today. A colleague of mine also chose this day to tie the knot. I’m pretty sure some moms out there whose due month is August wishes to deliver their baby today.

Blast from the Past
Last night, while I was working on an article for this blog, I received a phone call from a friend who is in town for a vacation. We are supposed to meet up for the usual get-together this week. According to them, they already have tickets for the repeat of the Greatest Hits of the 80s and they invited me to join up. Which made me ponder - is 80’s and the 90’s the in-thing nowadays? After the sensational Rick Astley tour last week, and Spandau Ballet’s Tony Hadley concert tomorrow (Aug 9 at the Araneta Coliseum) now my friends are inviting me to this 80s OPM concert. And hey, let me not forget the much-anticipated Eraserheads Reunion this month-end. Wow, I’m excited! My high school friends are the best friends I ever had until today. Coincidentally, I’ll get to recollect my past with them with the music we always listened to during adolescent years.

The Greatest Hits of the 80s features hit makers Randy Santiago, Louie Heredia, Gino Padilla, and Raymond Lauchengco. It’s going to be tonight, 08-08-08, 8pm at the Aliw Theater, Pasay City. You can still grab your tickets at the TicketWorld and TicketNet. This repeat concert is for the benefit of the Philippine Foundation for Tomorrow’s Good Children.

I grew up in the eighties and I still think that it's the best decade of all.

Minus the hairstyles.
